affording some protection and resulting in considerable diminution of the intended punishment. I suggest, therefore, overcoming this undesireable condition, if the children's bloomers are not to be taken down, by increasing the apparent severity of the intended punishment to make up for the added protection of their waterproofed nether garments. "Here again is mention of a boy of ten years still to all purposes petticoated, since he is wearing a frock on smock and underwear exactly the same as his sister is, and in this case he was a year older!
Now after this long digression, which the reader may forgive for the information contained, the story will be picked up again.
So Aunty produced these baby blue colored Linen smocks on tunics, and although at the time I did not know of the different styles they came in, yet now I know that it would be quite in and nature to keeping with aunt's my purpose choose the most childish style, for these tunics did button down the back and if in a hurry it was very difficult to put them on oneself. I did know that French boys wore their regular shorts under the tunics, and I at least felt that if we were allowed that, it would take some of the sting away of wearing what could only be described as skirts!
Alas! we soon found out, for Aunty produced for us matching pale blue linen bloomers, so girlish looking, that I knew I would welcome the tunic to hide such shameful nether garments! Aunty held up my tunic skirt while I stepped into the bloomers, and adjusted them so that the bloomer legs showed a good three inches below the hem of the tunic. "Now do not let me catch you boys trying to pull your bloomers up so they are hidden by the tunic. Your bloomers should show, for that is the way all well-dressed boys used to wear their tunics. It is very pleasing to see the bloomers showing under the frock smock. You will be happy to know that I had make up other tunics and bloomers for you, as they are so comfortable to wear and so easy to wash and therefore you can always wear a clean
